Study of Tau Lepton Decays to Three Charged Hadrons and One Neutral Pion

Abstract: We report a study of [tau] lepton decays to three charged hadrons and a [pi]0. We use (7.56 +/- 0.15) fb −1 of data collected with the CLEO III detector at the Y (4S) resonance, which corresponds to a total of (6.90 +/- 0.14) x 106 [tau]-pairs. Using both a Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector and measurement of specific ionization energy loss (dE/dx) for particle identification, we report the first observation of the decay [tau]− [right arrow] K−[omega][tau neutrino]. We report the first statistically significant measurements of the branching fractions for [tau]− [right arrow] K−[pi][pi]−[pi]0[tau neutrino] (excluding K0), [tau]− [right arrow] K−K[pi]−[pi]0[tau neutrino] and the first published upper limit for [tau]− [right arrow] K−K+K−[pi]0[tau neutrino]. We also measure branching fractions for the decays, [tau]− [right arrow] h−[omega][tau neutrino], [tau]− [right arrow] [pi]−[omega][tau neutrino], [tau]− [right arrow] h−h+h−[pi]0[tau neutrino], and [tau]− [right arrow] [pi]−[pi]+[pi]−[pi]0[tau neutrino].













First Observation of Tau -] 3 Pi Eta Tau-neutrino and Tau -] F1 Pi Tau-neutrino Decays

We have observed new channels for[tau] decays with an[eta] in the final state. We study 3-prong tau decays, using the[eta][yields][gamma][gamma] and[eta][yields] 3[pi][sup 0] decay modes and 1-prong decays with two[pi][sup 0]'s using the[eta][yields][gamma][gamma] channel. The measured branching fractions are[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -][pi][sup -][pi][sup+][eta][nu][sub[tau]])= (3.4[sub -0.5][sup+0.6][+-] 0.6) x 10[sup -4] and[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -]2[pi][sup 0][eta][nu][sub[tau]])= (1.4[+-] 0.6[+-] 0.3) x 10[sup -4]. We observe clear evidence for f[sub 1][yields][eta][pi][pi] substructure and measure[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields] f[sub 1][pi][sup -][nu][sub[tau]])= (5.8[sub -1.3][sup+1.4][+-] 1.8) x 10[sup -4]. We have also searched for[eta][prime](958) production and obtain 90% CL upper limits[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -][eta][prime][nu][sub[tau]])




First Observation of the Decay Tau- -] K- Eta Tau-neutrino

The decay[tau][sup -][yields] K[sup -][eta][nu][sub[tau]] has been observed with the CLEO II detector. The[eta] meson is reconstructed using two decay channels, [eta][yields][gamma][gamma] and[pi][sup+][pi][sup -][pi][sup 0]. The measured branching fraction is B([tau][sup -][yields] K[sup -][eta][nu][sub[tau]])= (2.6[+-] 0.5[+-] 0.5) x 10[sup -4], somewhat higher than the theoretical estimates. An improved upper limit for the second-class-current decay[tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -][eta][nu][sub[tau]] is set, B([tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -][eta][nu][sub[tau]])
